REDThe Temple Gallery is pleased to announce its final show of the 2011-12 season, the juried invitational, RED. The exhibition features work in a variety of media, including painting, mixed media and photography all inspired by the color red and the work of artist Mark Rothko and the extraordinary story surrounding his 1958 commission for New York’s Four Season’s Restaurant.

Over 200 artists submitted images of more than 500 works of art  with 41 artists from all over Arizona being chosen to exhibit. Submissions were juried by Terry Etherton and the staff of Etherton Gallery.

The exhibition will run in conjunction with the Arizona Theatre Company’s production of RED by John Logan, winner of six 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Play. Based on true events, RED is a “searing portrait of artist Mark Rothko’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting” in the newly completed Seagram Building designed by architects Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson.  Upon seeing the completed “pretentious” interior, Rothko— already unhappy with the idea of his work in the upscale setting—returned the cash advance and the murals never hung in the room.

RED opens April 13, 2012 and runs through June 1, 2012. An artist reception at Temple Gallery Friday, April 13, 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Temple Gallery is located at the historic Temple of Music and Art in SoCo at 330 S. Scott Ave., Tucson AZ 85701.
