The Temple Gallery is pleased to present new work by Tucson photographer Jeff Smith in its new exhibition, Jeff Smith: Drivescapes. Best known for his awe-inspiring images of lightning set against the Sonoran desert, the nocturnal Drivescapes are unsettling portrayals of the Arizona landscape made from the road in pursuit of those perfect storms.  Jeff Smith: Drivescapes opens with an artist reception Friday, January 20, 2012 from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Temple.

The Drivescapes images comprise a dark travelogue of monsoon life on the road. They offer a narrow and seemingly endless view from Smith’s car at night –signs of life along a receding road. Most of the areas he travels were once rural, but the urban environment has slowly encroached as witnessed by a steady stream of traffic lights, billboards, and stretches of recently paved road. In images like TTT, monumental, spidery veins of lightning are given scale by a high voltage, all night truck stop that is otherwise a neon oasis on your way to someplace else. In other images, lightning alternately competes with and blends into blurry attenuated neon traffic lights.

The hallucinative blur of neon and dramatic contrasts between dark and light characteristic of Drivescapes give the images a heightened cinematic quality that originates in the dangerous circumstances of their making. Smith simultaneously drove and photographed on those stormy nights, willing to give himself over to the chance experience. Smith says that when he drives he thinks not of the road, but in terms of f-stops and shutter speeds and scans the horizon like a wide angle lens. When you look at images like TTT, you become part of the artist’s singular, driving eye.

Jeff Smith: Drivescapes opens at the Temple Gallery with an artist reception on Friday, January 20, 2012, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm and runs through February 21, 2012.
