Etherton Gallery is honored to announce its summer 2012 show, A Classic Collection: Photographs from the Estate of Julian T. Baker, Jr. (1939 –2011). Opening June 16, 2012, the exhibition features a selection of photographs from the
collection of the late Julian T. Baker, Jr. including 20th century masters such as Harry Callahan, Linda Connor, Ralph Gibson, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Richard Misrach, Aaron Siskind, Frederick Sommer, Peter Stackpole, Edmund Teske, and many others. A Classic Collection opens with a reception, Saturday, June 16 from 7 to 10pm. The show runs through August 31, 2012.

A dyed-in-the-wool "Tar Heel" with the manners of a Southern gentleman and the soul of a vagabond, Julian Baker thought the only way to get to know a place was by car. He loved nothing better than to jump into his convertible and drive across the United States or motor around countries that most of us will only dream of. Like photography, driving afforded another way of seeing the world, and Julian amassed collections of stories and photographs with equal zeal. Collecting pictures was about savoring life and that pleasure is in evidence in A Classic Collection.

Please join us on Saturday, June 16 for the opening reception of A Classic Collection: Photographs from the Estate of Julian T. Baker, Jr. (1939 –2011) and the rare opportunity to see a museum quality photography collection. Baker was also a longtime supporter of the North Carolina Museum of Art.   A Discerning Eye: Julian T. Baker Jr. Photography Collection will be on display through November in the Julian T. Baker Gallery in Raleigh.  Visit ncartmuseum.org for more information.
