Contents: An expressive arts program for children living in domestic violence shelters and transitional housing, Through the Eyes of a Child: The Art Room features a selection of original works by children who are unable to put words to their experiences. The therapeutic act of producing art with its powerful healing impact celebrates the creativity of children, while increasing public awareness of issues facing children living in domestic violence shelters, and homeless recovery programs.
The mission of The Art Room is to provide art programs for homeless children and at-risk youth in an environment that fosters their sense of joy, creativity and exuberance.
Since the fall of 2000, The Art Room has directly served children (ages 3-18) living in domestic violence shelters and transitional housing programs at three sites in Tucson, Casa Amparo (of the Brewster Center), La Promesa and the Emergency Shelter (of New Beginnings for Women and Children). In the past two years, The Art Room has worked with a growing population of refugee children from Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran.
The Art Room sponsored by the John Wesley Miller Company, and the Vision Mark Foundation, with additional support from the local community, businesses, organizations and philanthropic individuals
